My 1999 ford taurus SE will shift into everything except overdrive, what do I need to replace?

Ive heard it could be a Automatic Transmission Solenoid that needs to be replaced, is this correct? Also, it also has a clicking sound that comes from behind the dashboard every time I turn the heat on, but no heat comes out, does anyone know the cause of these problems?
