How will credit affect secret security clearance in the air force?

My husband is about to join the air force, and he is interested in doing Air Traffic Control. Our credit has always been really good, but last year, I got sick and he wasn't able to pay the University off, so they sent him to collections. How will this affect getting a security clearance? What if we pay it off before tech school is over?
