Strange situation, advice appreciated?

I am dating this guy for some time. He rarely takes me out, so today i asked him to take me to a movie, which i am eager to see, he said that i've seen them all and not now, because he is saving for a car. I said ok, but when you will buy that car (i joked is it a year?). He flipped out and said that i should know how much an average class person makes and said that if i don;t like his social status i can't tell him straight away and he will never be like my exes (i used to date wealthy guys). I apoligized and said i didn't mean it. He is ignoring me. Is it normal behaviour? What should I do? I feel he got offended for no reason, maybe he feels bad about the situation (once he said something like he thinks i am too good for him). But i really don't think it's normal how he reacted? Maybe i should cut off the relationship id he acts like this for no reason?
