What are some good reasons why my check engine light is coming on in my 1988 735il bmw?

my check engine light is coming on and staying on longer than before. I just got a brand new battery yesterday, plus 4 days earlyer i got a automatic start and lock system put on my car, could all this be connected to that? or is something els going on? please help , i need real bmw answers only please
