When stopping at a stop sign or traffic lights do you put the car in Neutral (AUTO)?

I know that you put the handbrake on when coming to a stop sign or at traffic lights, but do just put the handbrake on and keep your foot on the footbrake or do you put the car in N and use the handbrake?
